Six cities that built an industry on their own ghost stories.
A French Quarter that never stopped burying people badly, a mile of Whitechapel, squares laid over graveyards in Savannah, sealed vaults under Edinburgh, the town that hanged nineteen of its neighbours, and Charleston after the lamps come on.
New Orleans runs more ghost tours than any city on earth.

The French Quarter has the stories, the above-ground tombs and the licensing rules that decide who can take you into them. Three different nights out, and they are not interchangeable.

Ghosts, voodoo and vampires on one walk
The Quarter’s greatest hits in one loop: the Sultan’s Palace, the LaLaurie house, a courtyard or two. Big groups, good storytelling, and the version most people book first.
The American ghost tour has four capitals. Pick your city.
Two thirds of the ghost tours you can book anywhere are in the United States, and four towns carry most of them. What it costs to walk each one, and what each is actually about.
The ghost tours more travellers take than any others.
Every walk on the site →Whitechapel, the French Quarter, an underground vault in Edinburgh. These are the walks that keep selling out, and what earns each of them the slot.

Britain does ghost tours in the alleys where the crimes were committed.
London has Whitechapel and the plague pits; Edinburgh has sealed vaults under a bridge and a kirkyard with a poltergeist on the payroll; York claims more hauntings per street than anywhere in England. The stories are older and the walks are colder.
Three ghost stories no other kind of tour can tell you.
Haunted houses and rattling chains turn up everywhere. A mile of Whitechapel pavement, a street sealed inside a bridge and a courtroom that hanged nineteen people on spectral evidence do not.

The Ripper Walks
Five murders inside a square mile over ten weeks, and the case is still open. The walks work because the geography survived: Mitre Square, Durward Street, the arch on Henriques Street are all still there, and a good guide walks them in the order the bodies were found. The bad ones show you a photograph outside a pub.

The Sealed Vaults
When Edinburgh built the South Bridge in the 1780s it left nineteen arches enclosed underneath, and the rooms inside were let out, flooded, abandoned and forgotten until the 1980s. Prague, Rome and Naples have their own versions. All of them are cold, confined, and capped at a handful of people per guide.

The Witch Trials
Nineteen people were hanged on Proctor’s Ledge and one was pressed to death for refusing to plead, on evidence no court would hear now. The good Salem tours are history rather than horror: the meeting house site, the accusers’ addresses, the ledge itself. October is the month everyone comes and the worst month to hear any of it.

What a ghost tour will not tell you until you turn up.
Almost all of these are on foot, outdoors, in the dark, and they run in the rain. Start times move by an hour or two with the season, because the tour needs it to be dark. Many are 13+ and the adults-only ones mean it. Underground tours are confined, low-ceilinged and capped at a handful of people. If any of that is a problem, the indoor and daylight options below are the honest answer.

What a night on a ghost tour actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. A self-guided phone hunt and a private paranormal investigation are the same activity in name only.
Where nearly all of it sits: the standard city walk, self-guided phone hunts and the storytelling tours.
Longer nights out. Pub crawls with drinks in, carriage and trolley rides, guided cemetery access.
Four haunted walks that will not wait for you.
Most ghost tours can be booked from a bar stool an hour beforehand. These four run on group caps, city licences and a calendar that takes no interest in when your flight lands.
- 01The Original Jack the Ripper Walking TourA capped group walking Whitechapel on foot after dark. The evening departures go first, and London gets dark early from October.
- 02Haunted Underground Vaults and Graveyard TourThe vaults are a confined space underground with one way in, so numbers are hard-capped per guide rather than per tour.
- 03Salem’s Best Ghost TourOctober is Salem’s whole year. Tours sell out weeks ahead and the town closes streets to traffic for the month.
- 04Haunted Evening Horse and Carriage Tour of CharlestonCharleston limits how many carriages work the historic district at a time, so the evening slots are gone long before the day.
Savannah and Charleston walk you round on a candle.
Both cities were laid out on top of their own burial grounds and neither has ever pretended otherwise. Savannah gives you squares and Spanish moss; Charleston gives you alleys, church graveyards and the old district jail. Both do it slowly, on foot, by candle.
Every Savannah night out →By city, from the French Quarter to the vaults
By kind of night, from a candlelit walk to an overnight hunt
New Orleans to Salem: the ghost tour run down the American East.
